Besides the Parade

Here is a little more about our visit to Colonial Williamsburg on Veterans day. 

Today's post is a lot more color toned down compared to my last post that was full of red,
white and blue colors from the Veteran's Day celebration.

Remembering

Yesterday was the day to remember, to celebrate and thank the veterans.
I'm a veteran. I've served in the U. S. Navy, but won't talk much about it these days, 

since I've ran out of sea stories! And I don't want my friends and family to
 roll their eyes, if  I began the "When I was in the Navy..." sentence one more time. 

But there are times when I sing it out loud, so I can get a military discount, including yesterday.
I proudly got out my military ID so I could get a free ticket to Colonial Williamsburg. 

Every year they have a Veteran's Day parade. Anybody can join the parade, but I like to
"use my rank" to find the perfect place and take pictures. Then I join them at ceremony time when
 they call to all the veterans from the crowd that have served at any time, to step forward and join the others.

Very grateful for all that have served, the ones that are serving right
now, and to others that take the time to remember us veterans!

The Distractions

After the rainy and cold days, there was a day with the perfect weather to work on the garden.

I went outside to start some cleaning for the winter and I brought my camera with me, just in case I saw something good. It wasn't to long before I found a spider in my gloves among dead flowers, then came the 

caterpillar and later on another spider. There will always be "something good" to take pictures of. 

If I want to get some cleaning done I will have to come out with out the camera!

Some Of It

There were times when rearing kids got overwhelming. The feed got expensive,
cleaning after them was smelly, them climbing on my furniture and the never ending
chasing after them at round up time in the evenings was to much for me! I almost got on
Craigslist and E-bay and sold them for 2 a quarter, no returns, final sale and free shipping.

But now that years have gone by, I'm so glad I kept them! Once they're grown they
 come in handy. With a little training kids will wash dishes, take out trash, play piano
for me or cut the grass. And they're so happy with just a little of hugs!

On a sad and frustrating note,  more than a month ago, in Mexico, 43 students 

went missing. Nobody has an idea where they are!  Things are getting heated up down there. 

As a mother, it saddens me to just think what the missing student's mothers are going 

through not knowing where their sons are.

Some years ago my kids were all about Lego. My son belonged to a Lego

 league and at home they made stop motion brick films, you can see them here and here.

 Then they forgot all about it. I even thought they had outgrown playing with legos!! Over the weekend

 we got a minifigure bag and this cute little pig came out of it. Well, now there are talks that my 

daughter might be making another stopmotion soon. Yay!

Pink for the Fall

In my short gardening adventure I've relied on old standbys plants such as asters and fall mums
 to bring fall color to my garden. It wasn't until not long ago that I've learned about many
 other plants that will also bring interest and add to the fundamentals of a garden in the fall.

One of  those plants is the Anemone 'September Charm', the anemone's
silvery-pink, shaded rose and mauve flowers add a very nice charm to any garden.

They are tough and easy-to-grow plants what will create clumps of elegant vine-like foliage,

and it is not only the little pink flowers that are pretty, but it's little pearly tight silver buds are so dainty!

The pictures of the fence were taken the first time I saw this charming plant

at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens. The other pictures are from my 

own little anemone that I bought not long ago

Question

Are these mushrooms good or bad? 

They look so good! And they bring back memories from when I was growing up in
Mexico. At there, there is a time when people go to the woods to pick mushrooms. I will never
 forget how delicious my Mom cooked them! Sometimes she cooked them in a green sauce
(en salsa verde), other times she would roast them and we would eat them in tacos. 

Yea, there is nothing we Mexicans don't put into a taco!

  

But I've also witnessed when half of a family got poisoned by eating bad mushrooms,

they didn't die, thank God! But it was very scary and the poisoned ones had to spend time 

at the hospital. So I haven't even touched these mushrooms just in case they're bad.

I also read that sometimes people eat good mushrooms in their homeland,
then they move somewhere else and eat mushrooms that look like the good ones
 from where they came from, and it turns out they're bad there.

Questions, questions! Good or bad mushrooms, they give my front 

yard a touch of the woodlands. And they make me smile when I see them 

on my old tree stump at almost the same height of my tall dahlias.

Blue in November

I got this tall salvia by planting some seeds I got from the store.  

It bloomed the first year, and since then it has been one of the faithful bloomers at my garden. 

 Humming birds love it. I sometimes feel bad when most of it's flowers are dead and 

I have to cut it down, then I see the  little humming birds anxiously looking  for it.

 But a couple of weeks later it will be full of flowers again, all the way 'till frost.

Yellow Dahlia

There was only one yellow dahlia that
survived the two years I didn't care for my garden.
 I decide to divide it, now I got five of them!
